Monitor your motorhome or boat during winter storage

Winter storage brings changing temperature and humidity conditions to motorhomes and boats. Monitoring the air inside helps you spot changes early and decide when action is needed.

When the touring or boating season ends, several months may pass without regular use. Doors are closed, belongings are put away, and your motorhome or boat is left waiting for spring. Inside, however, conditions continue to change with the weather throughout winter.

Reducing the Risk of Mould During Winter Storage

Moisture left inside and insufficient ventilation can make a motorhome or boat damp. Prolonged damp conditions can encourage mould growth on textiles and other materials and lead to musty smells. Even a motorhome stored indoors deserves attention.

A single humidity reading only tells you about that moment. Monitoring humidity alongside temperature gives you a clearer picture of how storage conditions change. Relative humidity can rise as the air cools, even when the amount of water vapour in the air stays the same.

When you visit your winter storage location, check the temperature and humidity inside as well. Measurements help you assess whether ventilation needs improving or moisture removal needs attention. There is no single humidity limit suitable for every storage space: what matters is following changes over time and addressing persistent dampness.

RuuviTag as a Temperature and Humidity Sensor for Winter Storage

The small, white RuuviTag makes humidity monitoring part of your winter storage routine. The battery-powered sensor measures humidity and temperature without cables, and you can check the readings in the Ruuvi Station app on your phone when you are within Bluetooth range.

Place RuuviTag in the living area of your motorhome or the cabin of your boat, somewhere air can circulate around the sensor. Avoid direct contact with a cold window or external wall, and locations where water could condense on the sensor.

RuuviTag measures the surrounding air. It does not measure moisture within structures, but provides useful information about indoor conditions to support inspections and winter storage maintenance.

Check Winter Storage Conditions from Home

If power and an internet connection are available at the storage location, you can extend your monitoring with Ruuvi Gateway and Ruuvi Cloud. This lets you view measurements beyond Bluetooth range and receive remote alerts with a suitable Cloud subscription. RuuviTag is also compatible with supported Victron systems, so an existing Victron setup may offer another way to use the measurements for remote monitoring.

Keep Track of Conditions Until Spring

Winter storage is easier to manage when you know what is happening behind closed doors. RuuviTag helps you notice changes and assess when it is time to visit.
