If you are looking for a place to store quality cigars, humidor is the best solution for you. But, even humidors are not always perfect. Get yourself a wireless humidor hygrometer and be aware of the conditions inside your humidor at all times.
There are numerous different humidor hygrometers on the market. By far, the best option for this purpose is a smart hygrometer. By smart, I mean a hygrometer that works wirelessly with your smartphone, shows you graphs of data, measures other important environmental factors simultaneously and alerts you when things change unfavourably. We definitely think that the best wireless hygrometer is the RuuviTag, a Finnish engineering masterpiece.
Storing cigars is smart financially. Good cigars are expensive. And if you let one of your more expensive cigars sit in an improper environment, all the money spent on that cigar will be thrown away. Investing in a good hygrometer is a smart investment.

What is a humidor?
A humidor is a specialized container used for storing and preserving cigars and other tobacco products. It’s designed to maintain a constant level of humidity, which helps to prevent the tobacco from drying out and losing its flavor.
Humidors come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from small desktop models to large cabinet-style units. They are typically made from wood, which is an ideal material for maintaining a stable humidity level.
To use a humidor, you first need to add a humidifying element, such as a sponge or gel pack, which will help to regulate the humidity inside the container. Once the humidor is properly seasoned and the humidity level is stable, you can store your cigars inside.
There are many benefits to using a humidor for cigar storage. Not only does it help to preserve the flavor and aroma of the tobacco, but it also helps to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria. In addition, a properly maintained humidor can add value to your cigar collection over time.
If you’re a cigar enthusiast or collector, investing in a high-quality humidor is essential. With the right care and maintenance, your humidor can provide years of reliable storage for your cigars, ensuring that they remain in perfect condition for your enjoyment.
What should the humidity be in a humidor?
The relative humidity inside a humidor should be 70%. Some experts say that the humidity should be a little lower, some say that it should be a little higher. In most cases, however, 70% of relative humidity should be a good level to aim for.
Try to keep the humidity as stable as possible. Big swings in the air humidity can cause problems in cigars. They can become soggy and soft or they can dry out.
Ventilation is a must in a humidor
A humidor should not be an airtight environment. If air does not circulate in a humidor, mould can start to grow. Approximately 25% of the humidors inside the room should be left unused. With empty space, the air will circulate more easily.
Effects of High Humidity in Your Humidor: What to Look Out For
When the humidity inside your humidor gets too high, it can lead to a variety of problems that can damage your cigars. Excess humidity can cause the cigar wrapper to expand and become spongy, which can ruin the flavor and aroma of your cigars. Additionally, high humidity can lead to mold growth on your cigars and inside your humidor, which can be harmful to your health if you inhale it.
To prevent these issues, it’s important to monitor the humidity levels inside your humidor regularly. If you find that the humidity is too high, there are several steps you can take to bring it back down to the ideal humidity of 70%. These include removing any excess water or moisture sources from the humidor, increasing the ventilation, and using silica gel packs or other humidity control devices to absorb excess moisture. By taking these steps, you can ensure that your cigars stay fresh, flavorful, and safe to smoke.
Maintaining Proper Temperature in Your Humidor: Tips and Best Practices
Temperature is another critical factor to consider when storing cigars in a humidor. Ideally, the temperature inside a humidor should be kept between 65-70°F (18-21°C) to prevent any damage to the cigars. High temperatures can cause the oils in the cigars to evaporate, which can lead to a loss of flavor and aroma.
Additionally, high temperatures can encourage the growth of mold and bacteria, which can ruin your cigars. On the other hand, low temperatures can cause the cigars to dry out, making them brittle and unpleasant to smoke. It’s essential to monitor the temperature inside your humidor regularly and ensure it stays within the ideal range to keep your cigars in perfect condition.
Tips for temperature control for humidor
- Avoid placing your humidor in direct sunlight or near a heat source, such as a radiator or oven, as this can cause the temperature to rise too high.
- Use a digital thermometer or hygrometer to monitor the temperature inside your humidor regularly.
- If you notice that the temperature is consistently too high, consider moving your humidor to a cooler location, such as a basement or air-conditioned room.
- If you live in a hot climate, you may need to use a cooling device, such as a small fan or air conditioning unit, to help regulate the temperature inside your humidor.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your humidor maintains a consistent temperature and your cigars remain in optimal condition.
If you live in an area where Fahrenheit is used, you can try to follow the 70/70 rule. This means that the air humidity and temperature should both be at 70. Temperature should be 70 ॰F and humidity 70% of relative humidity.
Why is a digital hygrometer better than an analog hygrometer in a humidor
Even though analog hygrometers may look cool, they are not as reliable as digital hygrometers. Furthermore, they must be calibrated more often in order to give proper readings. With a digital hygrometer, you can look at past measurements as well. With an analog hygrometer, you cannot be sure that your cigars are in an optimal environment at all times. House temperature fluctuates, which alters relative air humidity.
A digital hygrometer is a far better guardian for your cigars. In addition, wireless hygrometers give you the possibility of having the humidity reading right in your pocket. With a convenient app, you can examine the humidity levels in your humidor without needing to take a look at the box.
Larger humidors need more hygrometers
A good humidor hygrometer fits in all humidos. Small travel-sized humidors can only store a few cigars, as larger humidors can actually be entire rooms. That is why a hygrometer must be handy.
For larger humidors, relative air humidity can be different in different areas. With multiple humidor hygrometers, you can ensure that no place is too humid. If the humidifier is in one location, make sure to switch around your cigars’ places.

The lid is there to protect the Tag from water. The device is lightweight so you can put in any place where it fits.
- Then, name the RuuviTags in your humidor and add a wallpaper if you so desire.
- Add alerts to the Tags. Relative humidity should be 65% – 72% and temperature 19 ॰C – 22 ॰C. Now, everytime RuuviTag measures a value outside of these preset thresholds, you will receive an alert.
Here are the graphs of a day’s measurements. The humidity (top) is stable but too low. Temperature (bottom), on the other hand, is too high.
Conclusions
Cigars are expensive. Having a quality humidor hygrometer is a great investment. You can stop worrying about the conditions inside your humidor, wherever you are.
Keep the humidity at around 70% inside any humidor and the temperature at about 21 ॰C or 70 ॰F. By doing this, your cigars should stay in good shape.
