Most foods keep well when kept at recommended temperatures. However, meat and fish products stored in the fridge are much more easily spoiled than other types of food. These products should always be stored below 3 °C, which makes it important and advantageous to monitor the temperature inside your fridge.
Temperatures inside the fridge can vary considerably between different shelves and it is difficult to monitor optimal conditions using the fridge’s thermostat alone.
If the temperature inside a fridge exceeds 6 °C, the bacteria in the food will begin to grow rapidly. In addition, cold air keeps food fresh, as it slows down natural ripening in fruits and vegetables.
Avoid putting warm food in the fridge for temperature control and energy consumption reasons. Hot food brings moisture to the fridge, which condenses and freezes in colder temperatures. Frost on the inner surfaces of the fridge disturbs the functioning of the refrigerator and increases energy costs. It’s important to note that the temperature on the door shelves is significantly warmer than the inside of the fridge, and it doesn’t go down nearly as much as it does in the back of the fridge.
You can ensure the safety of your food and minimise food waste by monitoring fridge and freezer temperatures using Ruuvi sensors. -18 °C is the optimal temperature for the freezer in terms of energy efficiency and food preservation. However, if you freeze fresh food in large quantities at once, then the freezer should be even colder. To ensure fast freezing and better preservation, the temperature should be around -22 °C.
A freezer that is too cold can also cause problems. Cooling takes a lot of energy, but freezing temperatures can also change the taste and texture of food. This does not make it inedible or dangerous, but it’s a good idea to take this into account, especially when freezing meals – choose airtight containers for this purpose. A freezer that is too warm exposes food to growth of harmful microbes.
If you have a chest freezer, place one Ruuvi sensor at the top of the freezer and the other at the bottom of the freezer. Sometimes the built up frost in the freezer can cause the cover seal to leak. In this case, we suggest placing the Ruuvi’s measuring device at the top of the freezer to detect undesirable changes in temperature.
