A root cellar is a cool space underground, which is especially made for food preservation. By paying attention to the cellar’s ambient conditions, you will ensure that your food won’t spoil. A root cellar is an ecological option to store food, because it doesn’t require electricity to stay cool. You can store vegetables, potatoes, yams, drinks and other food products requiring cool storage.
The air in the cellar must be humid enough for the vegetables to stay in a good condition. Therefore relative humidity in a cellar can be higher than in living quarters. With environmental monitoring, you can ensure that the temperature and humidity are optimal for food storing. With an environmental sensor, you can improve the ventilation schedule, because trying to figure out the real temperature and humidity levels without any devices is really difficult.
The most common way of changing the conditions in a cellar is through ventilation. According to the outside temperature, you can either cool down or heat up the cellar by opening doors. With ventilation, you can also change the humidity inside the cellar. By monitoring the conditions in a cellar, you will notice how well the ventilation is working. If the temperature decreases too quickly, your ventilation may be too effective. Furthermore, with a small measuring device like the RuuviTag, you can find the subtle differences between different spaces in the cellar. Consequently with this knowledge, you can place more vulnerable products into the best, coldest spots.
Finnish RuuviTag is an excellent device to be used in a cellar. It measures air temperature and humidity accurately. In addition to these measurements, the device also measures air pressure and movement of the device. You can conveniently read these measurements on your mobile phone in real-time.
RuuviTag works with Bluetooth, so everytime you’re in the range of the device, you will be able to examine real-time information of the cellar. The application creates graphs of the past measurements, so you can examine the trends in the environmental conditions in the cellar. And, if you are not in the range of a RuuviTag, you can download up to 10 days of data from the device’s internal storage. Hence, you can examine the trends of the cellar even though you wouldn’t be in the range at all times.
You can set alerts to alert you if a certain threshold is exceeded. Alerts are especially handy when you are ventilating the cellar. You can set a threshold when you should close the door, and then act accordingly once you receive the alert.
With Ruuvi Gateway, you will receive measurement data even when not in the range of a RuuviTag. In addition, with Ruuvi Gateway, you will receive access to the Ruuvi web interface, in which you can examine graphs from up to 2 years. Also, you will receive alerts to your email anywhere, as long as you have a connection to the Internet.

Excellent!
After integrating four RuuviTags into my Victron Cerbo GX / VRM system in our Rapido motorhome, I can honestly say they have transformed the way I monitor the vehicle.
The setup now provides live temperature, humidity and pressure monitoring directly inside the VRM portal, allowing me to monitor critical areas including:
Battery Box
Orion DC-DC Charger Compartment
Engel Fridge
Main Rapido Fridge Area
What impressed me most was how seamlessly the RuuviTags integrated with the Cerbo GX via Bluetooth. Once connected, the data appears natively inside VRM and can be used for real alarms and automation.
I have now configured:
High temperature alarms
Low temperature alarms
VRM email notifications
Relay-triggered audible siren alarms
The system is now capable of warning me immediately if:
the lithium battery compartment gets dangerously cold
the battery box overheats
the Orion compartment becomes too hot
ventilation or airflow problems occur
The accuracy and stability of the readings have been excellent. The tags update reliably and provide a very clear picture of what is happening inside the motorhome.
One of the major advantages is that the system no longer relies on older digital-input alarm methods or complex workarounds. The RuuviTag + Cerbo GX combination feels like a modern, professional-grade monitoring solution.
The compact size, long battery life and wireless operation make installation extremely easy. No extra wiring was required for the sensors themselves.
For anyone building a Victron-based off-grid system, especially in a motorhome, caravan, marine or lithium battery installation, I would highly recommend RuuviTags.
They add a level of visibility and protection that is difficult to achieve any other way at this price point.
perfect to log my boat conditions when i’m away, and check pressure variations in real time when i sail
